Great observation, Bil. Yes Christmas is a very commercial holiday and many people make it a stressful time but I have found that the spiritual foundations is still very solid. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I'll lay odds that I was raised in your former girlfriend's "non"-denomination. You perfectly describe the rationale behind why we didn't celebrate Christmas and still decorated a conifer and opened presents on December 25. Trip down memory lane. Thanks.

As for me and my family... we'll be in church Christmas morning singing, praying and fellowshipping! Of course, it helps that every Sunday our church only has a 9:30 am service so we'll have the rest of the morning for food prep and rip and tear time! Thanks, Bill, for a thought-provoking post! Merry Christmas and Happy Everything to all!

Well said, Bil. Have a very merry! We'll be thinking about you when we are in church this Sunday. Not only in church, but also celebrating the baptism of our second daughter (adoption finalized last Friday!).

Bil,

This is awesome!

Way to tell it like it is!

I'm thinking about sharing it at church on Sunday morning. Really, I am.

We are going to have a "Dickens of a Christmas Day" on Sunday morning with storytelling. I'm having O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi" read, and I am going to read the last part of Dickens' "Christmas Carol" where it says without equivocation that Scrooge went to church on Christmas morning. I say, "If Scrooge can go to church on Christmas morning, so can we."

Thanks for this!

A-men!! Many of our church families have opted to have Santa's visit coincide with their return home after morning services. Granted, we have shortened the AM service to Worship Service (no Sunday School) only, but what a wonderful opportunity for us to be together with our biological and church (both blood families, if you believe) families!! The dinner can self-cook in crock pots and slow ovens while we come together to celebrate His birth and life for us.

Great read, Bil! We are celebrating the birth of our Savior with our kids/stepkids/great stepkids, etc., by reading the Christmas Story from the Bible, singing a few Christmas songs (the kids always like Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer)..and having a white elephant gift exchange cause we are middle class, a.k.a. ..poor. If they don't like what they get, they can blame themselves since it's what they gave us last year.
Our mouse huntin' kitty cat gets a can of Fancy Feast for her gift...makes her feel like the fluffy, white queen kitty on TV.
All will be well at the Riggin Farm on Christmas! Merry Christmas to you Bil and your family!

Bil, I agree with everything you said. I teach a class to the men in our church on the fourth Sunday of each month. I was so excited when I had looked ahead and saw I was going to teach on Christmas day. Then as the month of December got here our Bishop cancelled all the classes for Christmas and he is only holding the Sacrament meeting, where there will be a celebration of music, and then we can get home to the gifts. That is okay to celebrate with music and signing, but I am so disappointed not to be able to teach on this very special day. What came first and what is the most important?
Merry Christmas, Bil!
